Iβm closing my Star Trek site https://www.star-trek.info down when the domain expires on August 11, 2020.
New info added on July 3 – scroll down to blue.
– Please spread the word that the site is closing if you know people who would be interested! Iβm giving blanket permission to download whatever you want from here, and also to upload the photos and screencaps here to other sites, on the condition that you credit Ariane of https://www.so-obsessed.com as the source.
I have gotten a few questions about batch downloading. The easiest way is the use Bulk Image Downloader to download by the album – it’ll only grab the full size images (be sure to increase the number of scanned pages to something like 100 in the configuration page). But it’s not freeware, so you can also use a download manager or a download browser extention such as DownloadThemAll! by entering the Coppermine server directories and download there. You’ll have to do it episode by episode, and either set your program to either not download the thumbnails, or alternately delete the thumbnails from your hard drive once done.
Directory URLs for batch download:
If any of the episode directories show an index warning or blank page (they shouldn’t) let me know and I’ll fix it.
– I’ll continue to post my Star Trek wallpapers to my personal site at https://www.so-obsessed.com You’re more than welcome to come see me there π
– I shall still be capping Jeri Ryan on Star Trek: Picard for my Jeri site https://www.jeri-ryan.net
– I’m open to adopting this site out if someone want to take over.
Some background on this decision:
I’m a spoonie with several chronic illnesses, and it takes up a lot of my mental energy having to worry about this site simply due to its sheer size (about 360GB as a write this). This site is the last big site I have, and just keeping it going takes a lot out of me. Also, not the big deciding factor, but still one I took into account: the number of visitors have been going down the last year or so, so it’s not as motivating to keep doing this as it used to be.
I’ve been a huge Star Trek fan since the mid 1980s and that hasn’t changed at all and likely never will; a huge part of me doesn’t want to give up. But fansites are a work obligation β I know people want and expect updates often and regularly. Even if thereβs nothing to update with, thereβs always the chance that the server will blow up, or database problems, or hacking or whatever. I’ve been through so many of these! So while most of the time everything goes smoothy and doesnβt require action, itβs always in the back of my mind that anything and everything could blow up any minute. I canβt remember what not worrying about it feels like. For a long time that was ok and I thrived with it all because I was healthy and normal. But with these illnesses, I donβt have energy left for creative things after taking care of the fansites. I want to try and use what energy I do have for more creative pursuits such as writing and making fanart and, especially, non-Internet related creative stuff. This has turned into more of a job than pleasure.
I’ve been doing this site in particular since 1997 and I think that’s long enough. Part of me is very sad to see this site go, it’s so hard to give it up… but it’s time for me to be more of a casual fan now.
Edits:
July 3, 2020 – got questions about how I capped the Blurays, so I created a tutorial about it. It’s up on my site So Obsessed π
June 3, 2017 –Β the batch download instructions
I am sad to see this site go. Is there a way to download batches of photos?
See the post – I added some batch download details in there! π
I’m sad to see Trek Caps go but I can understand the reasons. Maintaining a site this size takes up a lot of energy. Thanks for many years of work for the fans!
It’s been my pleasure π
This is such sad news. You’ve done a great service to the Trek community.
Are you sure we can’t get you to change your mind?
To be totally honest with you… We’ll see! I tried to make the decision last year already, but couldn’t bring myself to do it. It’ll depend if I’ll be actually able to make myself physically delete the site from the server! I’d love to keep doing the site, It’s just that it’s so huge, and what with DSC and PIC going on, and new ST series on the way, it’d only get bigger and bigger and I can’t handle that π
Thank you for your kind words! π
Thank you for your hardwork! Please take care of yourself!
It’s been my pleasure π And I’ll try! π Thank you!
I am curious: I noticed that the DS9 and Voyager Screencaps are in 1080p, even though neither show has been released on Blu-Ray or High-Definition, yet. So how did you get them in that resolution without loosing clarity of the pictures?
The DS9 and VOY caps are from DVD, ripped to my hard drive and then ran through DGIndexNV to create a project file, to which I then add avisynth filter QTGMC code to de-interlace the video when it’s opened in VirtualDub. Once the project file is open in VirtualDub, I apply the filter Super Resolution 2.0 filter by Infocognition to re-size the video to 1200×900 and then cap it. It’s the QTGMC and the Super Resolution filter that retains the clarity and quality. DGIndexNV and Super Resolution are payware, and DGIndexNV alse has certain hardware requirements, but the rest are freeware.
This is great insight into all the work you’ve done to present the best quality screencap. Thanks!
Can I ask, however, what process you used to grab screencaps from Discovery and Picard?
Sure thing π Picard, Discovery, ENT and TNG HD/Blurays I capped with ffmpeg command line. It’s been so long, but I think I used DGIndexNV, Avisynth and VirtualDub for the TOS episodes. The TOS and TNG movies with ffmpeg.
It took some trial & error to figure out the correct ffmpeg commands, if you want me to post them, just let me know π
Ariane
I would definitely love to understand the FFMPEG codes you used for Picard and Discovery.
Thanks!
john
I’d been low key thinking about making a tutorial about it for a while, so that’s what I did! It’s up at site at https://www.so-obsessed.com/more/tutorial-screencapping-with-ffmpeg/ π
You don’t have to do this, but I would really love to see Voyager’s Seasons 1-3 screencaps, “The Undiscovered Country” screencaps, and Enterprise’s Seasons 2-4 screencaps. Really they are wonderful and best quality.
Maybe even download them, perhaps?
Sadly I don’t currently own any of those, and not being a big fan of them and with a limited budget, so they are rather down on my to-buy list. I got the movies from my local library, but they didn’t have “The Undiscovered Country” on Bluray, just DVD and I had no interest in that. But I re-checked again just now, and they’ve since added “The Undiscovered Country” Bluray too π I’ve put a hold on that, and if I get it fast enough I’ll cap it and upload those screencaps π Thanks for making me check! It bothered me some that the TOS movies weren’t complete. The library doesn’t have VOY or ENT (or DS9 – I don’t think these TV series were ever released with Finnish subtitles included on the DVDs, so that’s why) so I won’t be able to cap your other requests. I hope you can find good caps elsewhere π
EDIT:
Added The Undiscovered Country screencaps yesterday π
I’ve only recently discovered this site and all the hard work you put into it, but it’s been a really useful reference for one of my Trek art projects – particularly your caps of the Romulan pixmit cards/game from ST: Picard (caps and acknowledgement here, and final piece here). So, I just want to say a big thank you for all your time and effort.
It’s a shame that you won’t be continuing with this site, but totally understandable (especially if your health is affected by it). I hope your illnesses are managable – better yet, that they diminish!
Keep safe, and good fortune!
Thank you for understanding!
Wow, that’s impressive work the set you made! This is why I love Star Trek fandom, fans always find some insignificant-but-usually-cool to me bit, and make an hobby/art project out of it π When I capped TOS, people used to ask me to take screenshots of this, that and those and so I learned never to delete any caps, no matter what or who was in them, because when I did delete, I’d get a request for that omitted shot! π
Hi Ariane!
First things first – thank you for all the hard work you put into this site. I only discovered it when someone linked to it on Dreamwidth, but I really love what I saw so far!
Anyway, have you thought about donating your screencaps to Screencapped.net? I’m sure they would be very happy about the screencaps, especially since they only have ENT and PIC currently covered. Maybe they can even find a way to preserve all the scans and other pictures you have. (Please keep in mind that this is just a suggestion, you don’t have to react to it at all)
I’m talking with someone maybe taking over the site, but if that falls through I’ll definitely look into screencapped.net – I capped some stuff for them a few years ago, so they were pretty much first in my mind π I talked with them some already, they can’t take the site on as-is, but episode screencaps zips might happen. We’ll see!
